The Best Beaches in Florianopolis:
Praia Mole
A favorite among Floripa’s young and vibrant crowd, Praia Mole is a haven for surfers and sun-worshippers alike. With its golden sands backed by lush, rolling hills, this beach makes you feel like you’re in a postcard. It is a surfer’s paradise, with consistent waves, surfers flock here from all over the world to “hang ten” while the surrounding scenery offers up an Instagram-worthy backdrop. There are plenty of places to grab a bite to eat, including one of my favorite places to get vegan food in Florianopolis. Overall, it’s a beach that perfectly balances action and leisure. Praia Mole is a must-visit for anyone who visits Florianopolis.
Joaquina Beach
I found my happy place at Joaquina Beach, where the powerful surf breaks offer an exhilarating challenge for surfers and great entertainment for onlookers i.e. me.
But it’s not all about the waves here – the enormous sand dunes are prime territory for sandboarding, adding an extra layer of excitement to this stunning destination. There are plenty of nearby seafood shacks to refuel after swimming, surfing, or sandboarding, before watching the sunset over the mesmerizing landscape.
Campeche Beach
If you’re after a tranquil day at the beach, you’ll love the beauty of Campeche Beach. It’s a secluded haven perfect for those seeking serenity. Stretching over 5 km, this pristine shoreline boasts powdery white sands that are so fine they squeak and crystal-clear waters with perfect waves.
For a truly unforgettable experience, hop on a boat to Campeche Island, a protected nature reserve just a stone’s throw away— do note that they only allow a certain amount of people to visit the island a day so if you want to do this you need to get there early.
Lagoinha do Leste
The remote and unspoiled Lagoinha do Leste is a hidden gem accessible only by boat or a scenic (read: Hard) hike through lush forests. As challenging as the hike might be the journey is well worth it, as you’ll be rewarded with a secluded cove hugged by emerald hills and golden sands.
If you’re feeling extra adventurous once you arrive on the beach you can hike up the cliffs to take what’s come to be the classic Lagoinha do Leste picture, where you sit on a rock that overhangs the beach.
The small lagoon that gives the beach its name offers a peaceful retreat for swimming and relaxing if you want a break from the ocean. You’ll truly feel as if you’ve left the bustle of the world behind as embrace the natural beauty of this utopian escape.
Don’t worry about having to carry everything with you on the boat or during your hike, there are a couple of different options for food on the beach and even wifi— which is much appreciated since you won’t have cell service.
Jurerê Internacional
For a taste of luxury and sophistication in Florianopolis, look no further than Jurerê Internacional. This upscale beach destination boasts a chic atmosphere, with lavish beach clubs, upscale restaurants, and designer boutiques lining the shore— think of it as the Miami of Floripa.
Soak up the sun on the immaculate sands, sip cocktails at a posh beachfront bar, or dance the night away at one of the glamorous clubs. Jurerê Internacional is the epitome of style and indulgence – an opulent playground for Brazil’s elite.
Praia Barra da Lagoa
Praia Barra da Lagoa is a stunning slice of paradise with a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Now I might be a little biased since this was my “home” beach during my time in Floripa, but it’s one of the island’s best beaches. Stretching for miles, it’s the perfect beach for long walks, and with tame waves, it’s a perfect spot for beginner surfers. There are “Capi” carts selling caipirinha and fresh juice, and many other vendors selling all sorts of snacks and clothing.
The surrounding area is composed of a fishing village with a picturesque canal. When you’ve had enough sun you can explore the colorful streets dotted with quaint shops and lively bars. Praia Barra da Lagoa is a true representation of Florianopolis’ laid-back, sun-soaked lifestyle.
Prainha da Barra da Lagoa
Just a short walk across the canal from the bustling Barra da Lagoa, Prainha da Barra da Lagoa is a charming and secluded cove that feels worlds away from the lively main beach.
Surrounded by verdant hills, this picturesque spot boasts soft golden sands and inviting turquoise waters. The calm waves create ideal conditions for swimming and paddleboarding, while the surrounding rocks create the perfect atmosphere for a more intimate beach experience. There are all the amenities that you could need, from “duas cadeiras e um guarda sol” rentals meaning, two chairs and an umbrella, down to fresh coconut water, fish, and açaí bowls.
Praia dos Ingleses
Named after a shipwrecked English vessel, Praia dos Ingleses is a bustling beach mostly frequented by the local families. The azure waters and gentle waves make it an ideal spot for swimming, while the expansive shoreline offers ample space for sunbathing and beach sports. A diverse array of bars, restaurants, and shops are within easy reach, giving this beach a lively atmosphere all day and even into the night. Praia dos Ingleses is a perfect destination for those who enjoy a blend of relaxation and entertainment.
Praia da Galheta
A hidden treasure nestled between Praia Mole and Barra da Lagoa, Praia da Galheta is an unspoiled sanctuary for nature lovers and free spirits. Accessible via a 1-hour hike from Barra Da Lagoa or by navigating through the rocks at Praia Mole, this clothing-optional beach is known for its relaxed, inclusive atmosphere and pristine natural beauty.
There are snack shacks on both ends of this beach, and chairs and umbrellas available for hire. The calm waters are perfect for swimming and snorkeling, while the surrounding hills provide a picturesque backdrop for sunbathing and picnicking. If you want to escape the crowds and embrace tranquility Praia da Galheta is the place for you.
Praia do Gravatá
For those who don’t mind a short hike for a more tranquil beach experience, Praia do Gravatá is a must-visit. This small, secluded beach is nestled between lush cliffs, offering a peaceful and intimate atmosphere. The only way of getting to this beach is to hike for about 30 minutes through the lush jungle, the hike is easy/moderate level, but you should wear proper footwear. Also, note that you should bring everything that you need with you, it’s hit or miss if the little snack shack will be open.
Once you arrive you’ll be greeted with clear waters that have gentle waves making it perfect for swimming, while the rocky shoreline provides ample opportunities for exploration. With fewer visitors than its neighboring beaches, Praia do Gravatá is an ideal destination for a serene and rejuvenating escape, where you can truly connect with the beauty of nature.
After exploring so many of Floripa’s coastal gems, I’m left with a lingering sense of awe and appreciation for this magical island’s diverse treasures. From the exhilarating surf breaks of Joaquina Beach to the serene seclusion of Praia do Gravatá, Florianopolis offers a beachside experience to suit every traveler’s taste. Just remember that once you visit, it’s a place that will always beckon you to come back to enjoy this Brazilian paradise.
