It only takes a quick google search to know that there’s no shortage of of things to do in Ubud, from the Tegalalang Rice Terraces to The Water Temples, but what most travelers miss is that if you skratch a little past the usual checklist, there’s so many unique things to do in Ubud that will connect you deeper with the culture, and yourself.

After living here for nearly half a year, I’ve been able to uncover these unique things to do in Bali, hoping to make it easier for you to have a deeper more meaningful experience while you’re in Ubud.

This is not to knock the mainstream things in Ubud, because of all the places I’ve traveled, i’ve never enjoyed the touristic things as much as I have here.

Get Your Palm Read by a Shaman

One of the most profound and personal experiences you can have in Ubud is to get your palm read by a Balinese shaman. Shamans in Bali, known as Balian, are respected healers and spiritual guides. They don’t just tell you about your future—they help you understand your energy and life path in a way that feels grounding.

I remember sitting down with a shaman who delicately traced the lines on my hand,  while she shared insights about my purpose and inner journey. It wasn’t just about predictions; it was about clarity, connection, and aligning with my truth. If you’re open to it, a reading like this can leave you feeling more in tune with yourself and the world around you.

How to Book:

You can book your appointment to see a Baliense healer through a viator event, which usually includes a trip to the water temple, this is what I did my first go-round and loved it.

If you’d like to skip the water temple and just go straight to the Shaman, you can contact Dewa directly on whatsapp. He’s a Balinese meditation teacher who organizes shaman readings for foreigners and does the translations for the shaman because she doesn’t speak english.

You can tell Dewa you got his number from Gabrielle, he’ll take good care of you. His whatsapp is +62 811 380694.

Learn to Make Jamu and Traditional Indonesian Herbal Medicine

Jamu is more than just a drink in Bali; it’s a centuries-old tradition of healing through herbal remedies. Learning to make your own Jamu is like diving into the heart of Indonesian wellness. In a Jamu-making class, you’ll learn about the health benefits of each ingredient—from turmeric’s anti-inflammatory properties to the way ginger boosts immunity.

The hands-on experience is a beautiful way to connect with Bali’s holistic approach to health, and it’s something you can take home with you—both the knowledge and the recipe! I still make my own Jamu regularly, and it feels like a little piece of Ubud I carry with me.

I loved the class at Nadi’s Herbals, where they teach you to make not only Jamu, but a body scrub, body oil and a body mask. They also offer tours through their herb garden.

Make Your Own Silver Jewlery

There’s something so grounding about working with your hands, and learning to make silver jewelry in Ubud is an experience that blends creativity with tradition. Bali is known for its silver craftsmanship, and in Ubud, you can take a workshop with local artisans to design and craft your own piece.

During the workshop, you’ll be guided through the process—from melting the silver to shaping and polishing your design. It’s an incredible way to express yourself, and by the end of the session, you’ll have a one-of-a-kind piece of jewelry that holds personal meaning.

Take Part in a Melukat Purifying Ritual in a Waterfall

Bali’s waterfalls are not just stunning to look at—they’re sacred places for purification rituals. If you’re looking for a truly transformative experience, taking part in a Melukat ceremony at a waterfall is something you won’t want to miss. These rituals are designed to cleanse your spirit, release negative energy, and invite renewal.

Standing under the cool, powerful waters, feeling the energy shift around you—it’s an experience that leaves you feeling lighter, more present, and deeply connected to the land. One of my favorite spots for this is Tibumana Waterfall, which has a serene, almost hidden vibe.

E-Bike Through Ubud's Iconic Rice Terraces

Exploring Ubud’s famous rice terraces on an e-bike is one of the most refreshing ways to take in the beauty of Bali’s countryside. The electric bike makes it easy to glide through the terraces, even on the hilly paths, while enjoying panoramic views and the fresh air.

You’ll pass by farmers working the fields, stop at scenic lookout points, and even visit local villages. It’s a peaceful way to slow down and appreciate the rhythms of daily life here. Plus, the e-bike means you can cover more ground without feeling exhausted.

Experience Ecstatic Dance at Yoga Barn

If you’re ready to let loose and dive into some serious self-expression, Ecstatic Dance at Yoga Barn is a must. It’s not your typical dance session—there’s no choreography, no judgment, just pure movement. You’re encouraged to move however you feel, and the energy in the room is so contagious that you’ll find yourself dancing like no one’s watching (because no one really is!).

It’s an experience that’s hard to put into words, but it leaves you feeling free, alive, and deeply connected to your body. It’s one of those “only in Ubud” experiences that blends community, movement, and mindfulness in such a unique way.

Go on a Firefly Night Tour in a Traditional Village with Dinner

One of the most magical things I’ve experienced in Ubud is the Village Firefly Night TourOne of Ubud’s most enchanting and unique experiences is the Village Firefly Night Tour, where you can witness the magic of fireflies lighting up the rice fields as the sun sets. This tour goes beyond just the fireflies—it’s a beautiful way to connect with Balinese culture, as it typically begins with a visit to a local farm and even the guide’s own home, offering an intimate glimpse into village life.

After visiting the village and learning about the local way of life, the real magic begins as you walk through the serene rice fields, illuminated by the soft glow of hundreds of fireflies. It’s a surreal experience, far from the hustle and bustle, allowing you to feel completely immersed in nature. The tour usually wraps up with a traditional Balinese dinner, giving you the chance to enjoy local flavors in a peaceful village setting.

Take the Balinese Mystic and Ritual Tour

For those who are fascinated by Bali’s spiritual side, the Balinese Mystic and Ritual Tour offers a deep dive into the island’s sacred traditions. You’ll visit hidden temples, witness ancient rituals, and learn about the symbolism behind the ceremonies. It’s an eye-opening experience that takes you beyond the surface of Bali’s spirituality.

This tour gives you a rare opportunity to see temple rituals, participate in blessing ceremonies, and connect with the spiritual practices that have been passed down for generations. It’s an experience that stays with you long after you leave Ubud.
